LAZARIA
The term lazaret or lazaretto, is a building, island, or anchored ship that served as a quarantine station for maritime travelers. Lowe's exhibition Lazaria mimics this cross-section of humanity being inspected, observed, and waiting in a kind of purgatory. He has developed his paintings in this way, referencing imagery from a variety of masterworks, drawings, paintings, literature, and sculpture from history, having gathered them for scrutiny and consideration as if they were convened in a lazaret and made to occupy the same space.
Lowe has gathered this variety of diverse imagery to mirror dramatic and complex scenes of human drama that reference history, philosophy, mythology, sexuality, and allegory. And by so doing, he exaggerates or reinterprets a referenced work's original narrative, in addition to revealing the unfinished process of a particular style and utilizing contemporary painting techniques and subjects from his imagination. The resultant productions amount to a conceptual lazaret of human drama, in an exhibition of paintings entitled Lazaria.
