Tintoretto Sounding

*SOLD

h: 46” x w: 24”

oil on canvas

The two reclining women in the foreground, as well as some background elements, have been copied from an obscure Gaetano Gandolfi study of ‘St Felician Liberating Foligno from the Plague’ (c.1789). Figures presumably about to be eminently awoken by a thunderous bellow of sound from an observing sketched male figure’s trumpet, after a Tintoretto sketch ‘Angel with trumpet’ (c.~1560).
