Lute Players

Here the artist is responding to a classical group portrait ‘The Concert’ [with an Antique Bas-Relief], by Valentin de Boulogne (c.1591-1632) featuring only a lute player [Right] and a soldier [Left]. Lowe has painted his own portrait in place of Boulogne’s model, confronting the viewer with his gaze.
