Artist in Youth

*SOLD

h: 24” x w: 36”

oil on canvas

This work is Lowe’s response to a Henry Fuseli drawing ‘Artist in Despair before the Magnitude of Ancient Fragments’ (c.1779), wherein a slumping figure is situated amongst the colossal left foot and right hand, remnants of a once enormous Antique Roman sculpture of Emperor Constantine. Contrasted by Galgario’s ‘Portrait of a Boy with Still Life’ (c.1730), depicted here with the steadfast fortitude of a battle-ready soldier.
