Lowe has compositionally based this work on the Henry Fuseli illustration of the nineteenth-century German Tale Undine, ‘Undine displeased leaves the Fisherman’s hut’ (c.1822). The story revolves around a water spirit [Undine] imprisoned by both the environment of the physical world and schemes of the metaphysical. Lowe depicts the human form of Undine with a partially fleshed-out figure based on an eighteenth-century Francois Boucher drawing ‘Naids and Triton.’ The writhing serpent is after Fuseli’s ‘Thor Battering the Midgard Serpent’ (c.1790).
