| "Among the Seafarers" 35.75" x 53.5" Oil on Canvas Synopsis: Lowe has compositionally based this work on the Henry Fuseli illustration of the 19th Century German Tale Undine, Undine, Displeased, Leaves the Fisherman’s Hut, c.1822. The story revolves around a water-spirit (Undine) imprisoned by both the |
| environment of the physical world and schemes of the metaphysical. Lowe depicts the human form of Undine with a partially fleshed-out figure based on an 18th Century Francois Boucher drawing Naids and Triton. The writhing serpent, symbolizing the wrath of the male ego, is after Fuseli’s Thor Battering the Midgard Serpent, c.1790. It is Lowe’s intention to convey both volatility, and the ephemeral through his rendering of the works figurative elements. |
